Illustration of an FOMC calendar entry with only the high-impact marker highlighted, representing Audacity's narrowed news-trading restriction.
01 What happened

Fewer FOMC events are off limits.

Audacity has changed its news-trading policy after feedback from its trader community. The change is specific to the Federal Open Market Committee, the US central bank body that sets interest rates. Under the new wording, only high-impact FOMC events are classified as major news.

In practice, low and medium-impact FOMC events are no longer covered by the firm's 3-minute news trading rule.

02 What is confirmed

Which accounts and which events.

  • ✓Only high-impact FOMC events are now treated as major news under Audacity's trading rules.
  • ✓Low and medium-impact FOMC events are no longer restricted by the 3-minute news trading rule.
  • ✓The change is effective immediately, for both new and existing accounts.
  • ✓It covers the Ability Challenge, Ability One and FTP (Instant Funding) programmes.
  • ✓The existing rules for other major or high-impact news events outside the FOMC are unchanged.

This is a loosening, not a tightening: fewer events are restricted than before.

03 What remains uncertain

Details the announcement does not give.

  • ✓Impact ratings. The announcement does not say which source or calendar decides whether an FOMC event is low, medium or high impact.
  • ✓The window. It refers to a "3-minute news trading rule" without saying whether that is three minutes before, after or both.
  • ✓Other programmes. Only three programmes are named. It is not stated whether any other Audacity programme is affected.
04 Why this matters

A small change with a practical effect on FOMC days.

FOMC announcements and related events are among the most closely watched on the calendar. Under the old wording, traders on these programmes had to stay out of the market around lower-rated FOMC events as well as the major ones. Under the new wording, the restriction is limited to events rated high impact, which leaves more of the day open to trade.

Because the change is immediate and covers existing accounts, traders already funded with Audacity benefit without needing to buy anything new. Nothing else about news trading has changed.

05 What happens next

What to confirm.

Worth confirming directly with Audacity before relying on the change: which calendar defines an event's impact rating, and the exact timing of the 3-minute window.

06 Comparing your options

Comparing news-trading rules across firms.

News-trading rules differ widely, from short windows around high-impact events to full bans. If trading around central bank events matters to you, it is worth comparing against an established firm.
