A new leverage model, with an attention-grabbing name.
FundedNext has announced the upcoming launch of Dynamic Leverage on FNmarkets, its own trading platform, featuring what the firm calls an "Unlimited Leverage" tier. The model will cover FX Majors, FX Minors and Gold (XAUUSD). Rather than applying a single leverage ratio across an entire position, the system starts a trade at the highest available leverage and automatically steps it down as the position grows larger.
The word "unlimited" is doing a lot of work in that name, and it's worth looking closely at what it actually covers before assuming it describes the whole trade.
Three bands, one shrinking multiplier.
FundedNext published a worked example for a 5-lot position on a major currency pair, and it shows exactly how the tapering works:
| Position size | Leverage applied |
|---|---|
| First 0.50 lots | Highest available ("Unlimited") |
| Next 1.50 lots | 1:2000 |
| Final 3.00 lots | 1:1000 |
Only the first tenth of that 5-lot position gets the top-tier leverage. The bulk of the trade, three-fifths of it, settles at 1:1000, a leverage ratio that's high by retail standards but far from unusual for a funded-account platform. The effective, blended leverage across the whole position ends up well below the number in the product's name.
Tapered leverage is a genuinely sensible design, marketed with a headline number.
There's a real risk-management logic to scaling leverage down as a position grows. It lets a firm offer aggressive leverage on small, early exposure, useful for a trader scalping in and out, while capping the effective risk on a large position that could otherwise blow through account limits quickly. That's a more nuanced approach than a flat leverage cap applied uniformly regardless of size.
The naming is the part worth being careful with. "Unlimited Leverage" is accurate for the first half-lot of a trade and misleading as a description of the product as a whole, which is exactly the kind of headline figure that looks best in a promotional graphic and worst in the fine print underneath it.
Questions, answered.
